Gary started in the industry as a 16 year-old runner at a top film optical company. After working his way to lead cameraman he moved to motion control and special effects photography at Britain’s most revered post house, The Mill where Gary ran their Motion Control Studio.
At The Mill, Gary worked on hundreds of high-end commercials and movies including, Saving Private Ryan, Entrapment, The Mummy, The World Is Not Enough and Enemy Of The State. His effects work took place both on the ‘Super Cyclops’ process stage at Shepperton Studios and on various locations with the ‘Milo’ mobile Mo-Co rigs.
The award winning BWM ‘Drop’ was Gary’s first commerical as a DOP shot for director Paul Street in 1998. He has since gone on to shoot many more award winning commercials worldwide with a host of talented directors. A specialist in automotive photography, he has shot numerous commercials and high-end corporate films for almost all the manufacturers in the car industry.
Gary first collaborated with Duncan Jones on the Carling ‘Robots’ commercial before they came together on Duncan's first feature Moon, which has won 22 awards. Since then Gary won the Technicolor Award for Best Cinematography at the Dinard British Film Festival 2012 for his work on Ill Manors and lensed the winner of BAFTA Scotland Best Feature Film for 2016, Tommy’s Honour.
Gary has also shot several well received, flagship dramas for Sky Atlantic, Channel 4 and the BBC, including Fortitude, Strike and The Great Train Robbery.
